Anyone have ideas for wedding photographs to add to the list?

Posted by admin on March 6th, 2010 and filed under photographs | 3 Comments »

Im making a list of photographs that i definitely want taken at the wedding so i am not disappointed. I feel like i might be missing some, but im not sure. Can any of you give me a list, then i can go through them and figure out which ones im forgetting? The wedding magazines only really give a basic list. Even some creative ideas would be nice.

I forgot to get the one of our two hands together showing our rings. I’ve always regretted that.

Also, we dont have one picture of me and him with my family alone. Plenty of us with his family, but none of us with mine. Dont forget basic ones like that. And make sure that you take an individual shot with each of your attendants alone (you with each bridesmaid) along with the group shots. I just did me and my MOH alone and I havent spoken to her since the day after the wedding (long story). I wish I had a shot of my other bridesmaid and myself to replace the shot of the MOH with in my album.

Creatively, my sister had one that I thought was really good, it was of the two of them running, but the photographer got it so that you could see the cocktail hour going on in the background and it looked like they were escaping, really a great shot.

What kind of camera should I purchase to use for greeting card photographs?

Posted by admin on March 4th, 2010 and filed under photographs | 3 Comments »

I am planning on starting a greeting card business, and would like to know the most practical camera for this, and also how to transfer the photographs to a greeting card.

I agree with Ken about the camera. Personally I LOVE my Nikon Coolpix. Get a good tripod, too, because night pictures can be fantastic!

I disagree about buying a good printer. I think you could arrange, at least at first, for a professional printer to make your cards more cheaply than you can buy a printer and supplies.

Where can I find old photographs online?

Posted by admin on March 2nd, 2010 and filed under photographs | 1 Comment »

I’m an artist doing a series on death and I was wondering where I could find 1700’s and 1800’s photographs of people online. Thanks!

The USA’s Smithsonian Museum photo collection is the best free collection of old photos I have found. Browse or search here:
http://smithsonianimages.si.edu/siphoto/siphoto.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=home

Also, doing a Google search for things such as 1800’s photos and similar phrases will help you find sites with a few old photos such as this one:

You will find no photographs from the 1700’s because the earliest known photograph is from the early 1800’s.

How can I take professional photographs?

Posted by admin on March 1st, 2010 and filed under photographs | 5 Comments »

I was wondering how I can take professional looking photographs with my camera. The kind of photos you see in magazines and stuff. I have a Nikon D40 with 18-55mm lens, I’m going to get some new ones later though. Bear with me, I’m still figuring out this camera. Any tips are appreciated, thanks. :)

First, enroll in photography classes.

Second, READ & STUDY the Owner’s Manual for your camera until you know every setting and feature and when, why and how to use them.

Learn about light and composition and ISO and f-stops and shutter speeds.

Learn to shoot in Manual Mode – take control of your camera. After you’ve fully mastered shooting in Manual you can switch to Aperture or Shutter Preferred.

Learn to slow down. Take the time to look at a scene from different angles – standing, sitting, lying flat on the ground. Often, moving a few feet right or left will change the entire composition.

Learn to pay as much attention to the background as you do to your subject. Good lighting and a nice expression on your subject’s face is wasted when there is a tree or pole "growing" from their head or a powerline "running" through it. Watch that background.

Slow down. Develop what I call the "sniper mentality" – one shot, one good image. Sure, a sniper misses occasionally. Ignore any suggestions to just shoot, shoot, shoot and shoot some more. That’s what I call the "machine gunner mentality" – take 300 shots and hope 10% are worth keeping*. That’s a great way to guarantee you’ll be spending time at the computer trying to seperate a few good images from a whole lot of lousy ones. Honestly now, wouldn’t you rather be out with your camera?

Read. Read photography magazines. Read books on photography. Read books about famous photographers.

Good luck and welcome to the fascinating, frustrating world of advanced photography.

* One person stated in here that if they took 1,000 pictures anf got one good one they were happy. IMO you’d likely get better results giving the camera to a chimpanzee.

How many digital photographs can be stored on this compact flashcard?

Posted by admin on February 26th, 2010 and filed under photographs | 2 Comments »

A CompactFlash card has a usable capacity of 4 GB. Approximately how many
digital photographs, each of size 2.4 MB, may be stored on it?

Depends on whether this is a simple maths question or a real life one.

if it’s simply maths, then 4000/2.4 = 1666 photos.

however in reality. people confuse the definitions of file size in terms of computer files.

difference is the classic sense of giga mega kilo has a difference of 10^3 = 1000, whereas when described as a computer files the difference is actually 2^10 = 1024.

strictly speaking all the computer files should be using units such as GiB, MiB, KiB (1024) instead of GB MB and KB (1000). however, people just simply use one (ie. GB MB and KB) for simplicity.

but for disk space, it’s actually describe the number of bits in the classic sense. ie.

in this case 4GB = 4 x 10^9 bites = 4 x 10^9/(1024 x 1024) = 3814.7 MB

So in reality, the photos you can store would be,

3814.7/ 2.4 = 1589 photos.

hope it helps.

How do I find a publisher and store contact for my photographs for book to be in bookstores?

Posted by admin on February 22nd, 2010 and filed under photographs | 2 Comments »

I want to create a book of my photographs and some text, to be sold in B&M well-known chain bookstores. How do I go about this, find a reputable publisher, get into the stores? Any help would be great, thanks.

Try researching different publishers. That is the best advice.

Where can I get photographs printed on professional paper?

Posted by admin on February 21st, 2010 and filed under photographs | 4 Comments »

I want to take photographs with my camera and have them printed on paper that is back-printed with the name brand of the paper, professional quality and "do not copy without permission". I have photos taken by other photographers that say this. Do I have to have them printed at a lab to get this or can I get this paper myself and do it on my own printer? If so, where can I get the paper?

These people are nice, do great work, and sure could use you black and white business.

No affiliation, but I do like their quality work.
