this just makes me incredibly angry! how could we have been so naive for so long? it astounds me! this makes me want to go out and make SURE something gets done; because if the oceans go, so do we, and that is terrifying. we only get ONE earth, and she’s beautiful and gives us LIFE, so we need to make sure that, above all, she is protected, as well as ALL of the Earthlings that inhabit her, on land, sky AND sea.

Please continue. Very insightful. Conversion ratios for beef, goats and sheep are most efficient and healthful on grass. The math for farming fish that are carnivores is terrible and just as bad or worse than overfishing the wild. Proper farming of herbivores like tilapia and catfish is the best solution for eating fish.

I only very occasionally eat fish and then it’s usually only a Tunafish sandwich maybe once a year. I also eat very little meat (I am not a vegetarian though), very little Chicken and very little Pork. The footprint for meat is much higher than most people think

    Fish farming is …
Fish farming is actually a good thing. By raising fish on a “farm”, the natural fish population is left to nature. Our oceans are being over fished and there are dead zones all over the ocean and there is a giant area of plastic in the pacific ocean. The consequences of our numbers are showing up everywhere, and I just hope we fix things before the damage is irreversible.

    It’s not the …
It’s not the scientist that don’t know if we are warming or cooling, it’s the politicians that want to muddy the science. All of those old cooling articles were in the popular press and were not the scientific consensus at the time.CO2 has been known as a green house gas since the early 20th century and they were questioning the wisdom of dumping co2 into the atmosphere since then as well.

Environmentalists are not against fish farming per se – they are against poor practices and a badly managed industry. They are quick to applaud the good examples of aquaculture and would like to see more of it.

I agree with your perspective on lowering global human population, but don’t ask someone to change their wish. Her wish is a wonderful one that we also need. You should strive to gain the attention of TED and make your own wish – we could use that one too!

  24. oceansolutions Says:

    As individuals, you …
As individuals, you can cut back on your consumption of seafood, lower your use of disposable plastics, make sure the disposable plastics you must use are recycled, and write to your elected officials and tell them that the ocean matters to you and you would like to see more fully protected ocean parks – both in your country’s waters and in international waters – the high seas!

  25. oceansolutions Says:

    There are fish that …
There are fish that are less problematic to eat than others. The Monterey Bay Aquarium puts out a safe sushi guide so you know what is bad and what is not so bad. I usually stick to the veggie rolls, but last night I found sashimi from U.S. farmed raised tilapia – this is a great alternative to the consumption of ocean wildlife.
