The Hubble Deep Field: The Most Important Image Ever Taken

Posted by admin on September 22nd, 2009 and filed under images | 25 Comments »

In 2003, the Hubble Space Telescope took the image of a millenium, an image that shows our place in the universe. Anyone who understands what this image represents, is forever changed by it.

How Can the universe be 78 billion LY across? I explain that in this article:

http://www.deepastronomy.com/hubble-deep-field.html

There is also a link to a science paper on the topic, that paper actually states 96 billion LY.

    I wonder what a …
I wonder what a Christian thinks when they watch a video like this. I chuckle to think what their thought process is when they see a Neanderthal skull and imagine those creatures building fires, creating tools, drawing on cave walls, burying it’s dead, riding on the bow of Noah’s Arc, and maybe even playing stickball with Adam and Eve. Great video. I hope you dont get sued for causing someones head to explode.

    That’s not an …
That’s not an excuse not to be usefull. Don’t let the little time you have go to waste. In fact, computers slows the evolution, I have a picture, one of those “comment-pictures” it has a picture of some pyramids, and the text beneath it says:
    “Slavery
    it get’s sh*t done”

    Just think of how …
Just think of how meaningless we are to the universe… many of us go around we make a difference, maybe even that our lives has a meaning. Mankind has been around for a short period of time compared to the time everything and nothing have existed. Let’s say you live for a 100 years and made everyday count, you did something usefull every minute of your life even then, what would a century of being usefull mean, when everything else will exist for another millenium or two?

    when you think …
when you think about how big the universe is, it’s quite easy to slip into the whole “what’s the point” cycle, i redularly slip into this because of my love for space, but what i always think is that since our time is so short, instead of wallowing in “what’s the point” land we should make time as enjoyable as we can

Don’t get me wrong, astronomy is an amateur hobby of mine. I’ve learned that most of the time, “amazing” doesn’t do astronomical discoveries justice.

But when people argue “look how big the universe is, we’re so small, therefore we’re not important because the universe is so big,” but what does the size of the universe have to do with human possibilities and importance?

I like to think that humanity is more important then the horse head nebula.

    who said any one …
who said any one was sure there’s life in another planet? the guy in the video only talked about POSSIBILITIES. Even so, there’s no reason to doubt alien life.

I once layed back and stared into the country night sky and tried to relax my eyes to take in everything. after about 20 minutes there was a flash of light and for that brief instant i understood the scale of it all. It wasn’t there long enough to think about at the time. by the time it was there it was gone again but i know that i understood it for that split nano second. It was amazing.

Religions, Greed, Racism and Stupidity kill intelligence!

We are all stuck in a imperfect world.

We should build galactic prisons and send and keep people that came to this world with evil minds.

Many people are born evil, since day one of their conception! .Regardless of their backgrounds.

I am sure there is …
I am sure there is life out there, but so what? We have Billions of people here on earth and dont care for them. There are many other creatures here too and we just hunt and kill them. In my front yard there are probably countless forms of life and I dont help them. People are only interested in finding something greater than themselves to point the way and make life meaningful. If we cant find it here with all we have, why look anywhere else?
    Pretty pictures

I get it. Someone else answered more thoroughly. I already knew what you have stated, I was just confused because the way he said it was like our galaxy is one of many galaxies in the milky way, and he also said the number five hundred thousand million…doesn’t seem correct to say a number like that, but OK. Thanks anyway though! :)
