The Hubble Ultra Deep Field in 3D

Posted by admin on September 25th, 2009 and filed under images | 25 Comments »

I’ve recently discovered an animation that was rendered using the measured redshift of all 10,000 galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field image.

I’ve written a short script that leads you through a quick history of both deep field images and this video ends with a fly-through of the Ultra Deep Field.

Every galaxy in the image is in its proper distance as viewed from the telescope line of sight.

As if this image wasn’t amazing enough.

    Oh please… the …
Oh please… the flip side is the universe created itself out of nothing and oh lucky us, the rock we call earth just happens to be the right distance from the sun, have the right tilt of axis, have an ozone layer to protect us, Jupiter just by dumb luck has enough mass to act as a perfect astroid deflector for the earth and on and on. Now seriously, which is the bigger fairy tale? An all powerful creator on just dumb luck with the odds working out to something like one in 50 trillion?

    please, in our …
please, in our galaxy with Billions of Stars,Suns, and planets100,000lt yrs across..in a Universe with Billions of Galaxiesyou honestly think there is some mysterious sky God Judging us puney humans,on this tiny nothing of a planet,in a tiny solar system that lies 3/4 of the way out from the center og our galaxy?,and this mysterious God actually cares about what we do with our penis’and vaginas? Really..???

    Really boils down …
Really boils down to how you define space and universe or substitute cosmos.
My view, each of those terms already express the sum of EVERYTHING. No need therefore for it to expand. One could however argue everything in the universe is expanding outward from the “big bang” which is amazing similar to the bibical creation story limiting that to merely Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

  5. willieofroanoke Says:

    Nobody has yet has …
Nobody has yet has defined “space” beyond what it appears to be which is nothing. It is merely convenient to plug some equation and claim oh look, we observe red shift so not only is the universe expanding, but now the absurd that some galaxies are moving away faster than light speed. My point is space always was X size. While objects (galaxies) within the confines of the universe are moving outward and accelerating, only in some egghead’s theory is it required for space to expand to explain it.

    I agree completely …
I agree completely – but try convincing people that the big bang is a guess. It’s as bad as the inquisition.

  7. hflat1 Says:

    That is the …
That is the definition of expansion, even when you heat up metal and it expands, the atoms stay the same size and just move farther apart.

  8. dylanzor Says:

    all of those that …
all of those that actually mean something are, indeed, arrogant. any time you think you’re right about something without verification, whether the REASON is ignorance or estimation (either of which all of your inflated list falls under), you’re being arrogant. perhaps you don’t understand what arrogance is?

  9. Khanstant Says:

    You’re greatly …
You’re greatly oversimplifying things to make a condescending point.

  11. willieofroanoke Says:

Oh I see, you only …
Oh I see, you only respect people that agree with you & distane those that expose others for being little more than flimflam artists earning a nice buck engaging in endless bullshit they know full well can neither be proved or disproved. Academics crack me up. They always are so full of themsleves and rarely know anything of the real world….maybe because they don’t live in it and seek shelter in academia where they foster a false reality about everything…especially their own self-importance.

  12. willieofroanoke Says:

    The best …
The best description of “space” I’ve heard is it is: the unlimited expanse in which everything is located. Now “science” attempts to tells us the universe is expanding. That’s necessary to conform to some other half-ass theories. If “space” is the void between galaxies, it (the universe) isn’t expanding, objects are simply moving further out into “deeper” space or you are left with the moronic notion that space which is nothing but the background needs to expand to accomdiate contents..

  13. decadyne Says:

    Specifically cite a …
Specifically cite a half-baked theory that is replacing an established theory.

I would have respect for what you’re saying if I didn’t already read that you don’t respect academics.

Get a clue kid. If your bio is honest, you’re just some wet behind the ears 22 year old punk. Hell, I got ties older than you sonny. You know next to nothing about the topic, hell, you know hardly anything about life… yet. I see right through all the bluster. Typical kid.

  15. Greywyn7 Says:

    Well, objects are …
Well, objects are moving away from us BECAUSE the universe is expanding. Why is the universe expanding? That is the question that gave us the big bang theory.

    I see theoddone200 …
I see theoddone200 waving the white flag since he can’t make a logical argument, necessary to become the typo police.

Astrophysics, astromony and science in general have been life long studies. Entering my 6th decade of life I grow weary of the petty arguing, the endless bickering and mindless scarables and now the latest practice of throwing established theories under the bus and in their place smugly offering half-baked garbage to replace them. I’m afraid we’re grwoing dumber, not smarter.

  18. theoddone200 Says:

I think there is someone crossing a bridge near you. Better go get your riddles ready troll.

  19. theoddone200 Says:

First of all that comment has no context what soever.
Second its PHYSICIST you should know that after all your smarter than someone with 2 masters.
3rd. That is why they are physicists they shouldn’t have to work an “honest days work” if they have a job as a scholar. Since when does hard labor only count as hard work?.
4th. “knowing full well much of the “science” is THEORETICAL hogwash, unprovable and not practical to even attempt experiment with in the real world” i think this is a joke.

    Partial list of …
Partial list of types of assumption about which the quality of arrogance is not included by necessity:

    1. naivete
    2. lack of experience or knowledge
    3. mathematical modeling for extrapolating outcomes based on data (!)
    4. logical deduction
    5. estimation of all kinds
    6. mathematical proofs
    7. hypothesis
    8. modal logic
    9. hypothetical derivations
    10. a priori postulation

None of these types of assumption beg arrogance in any way at all.

  23. dylanzor Says:

    in what instance is …
in what instance is an assumption not arrogant?

  24. decadyne Says:

    It’s not arrogance. …
It’s not arrogance. It CAN be arrogant. Those are completely separate realities.

  25. dylanzor Says:

    if you don’t …
if you don’t understand how believing you’re correct without verification is arrogant, i don’t know what to tell you. dictionarydotcom uses the word ‘arrogance’ to define assumption.

if you honestly think that disagreeing with one point of view means i automatically agree with another point of view, you’ve defeated yourself before i even had the chance. as if you hadn’t already done that by attacking me personally.
