What images are you legally allowed to use to create layouts?

I want to create layouts with bands or celebrities for myspace, but I’m not sure which images that I can legally use. I read some on "fair use" but I couldn’t find anything pertaining to what I need. I just want to use images and edit them to create layouts or wallpapers. I’m not talking about images that someone has already edited by adding different effects or words on it or personal pictures someone took at a concert. I just want to use pictures of the bands or their logo to create my own image. I have no problem giving credit to the website that I find the image, but I don’t know if that’s enough. Thanks for any help.

Fair use allows you to use an image in a satirical way, or for educational purposes. You can’t use it for decoration, and certainly not for profit. You cannot use a copyrighted image (and all are, whether they show a copyright notice or not) without express permission – just giving credit is insufficient.

If you’d like images you can use for free, look for images licensed under "Creative Commons" or see the wikimedia site http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page . Owners of copyrighted content can provide a ‘creative commons’ license which says essentially that you can use their images any way you want, provided it is not for profit.
