i want to own a photo gallery but dont know if I need to have specific knowledge.
I believe that being a photographer is a liability to being a gallery owner. The same is true of other types of art galleries. What you do need to have is a good eye for what makes a great photo, an ability to put yourself into the heads of your prospective clients to determine the type of photos they want to see, a wide ranging interest in and like of different types of photography, a good business sense, and lots of working capital to keep you open during the lean times which will be long and hard, especially at the beginning.
I wish you the best. There needs to be more quality photo galleries where good photographers can exhibit their work.

If you’re going to own a photo gallery you should have specific knowledge of it. How are you going to sell and market a product you don’t understand? Now, thats just crazy talk!

You dont have to know how to take a good picture, but you should know how to recognize one. If not, you wont be selecting work that will sell. Business acumen is important, but before all of that you need to have an eye for style and a finger on the pulse of the community that you are exhibiting to.
