why do they use photographs of chromosomes instead of the chromosomes itself?

To diagnose a genetic disorder of human, lab technicians use photographs of chromosomes rather than the chromosomes themselves. Why is this so?

They use the chromosomes to get the picture, so they do use the actual chromosomes. The picture documents the results and allows the image to be seen by the naked eye.
